Is there a way to widen the display of a custom transaction line field?

I have created a custom transaction line field to populate an alert message after an item is entered on a quote or sales order; however, the field width appears to be a standard width similar to other fields on the form.

I tried changing the width on the display tab of the field, but no changes resulted on the screen view of the forms.

Any help appreciated!
