Parent/Child Relationship

I am finding issues with using parent/child relationships on invoicing.

If I invoice using the child and issue a credit memo I am unable to apply that credit memo to another child or even the parent.

Was told during implementation that this was possible but I just messed up my books trying to get a cm applied that was given to the parent. The payment was applied but was unable to use the credit as it wouldn't find it.

Does anyone else have this issue.
