What is the proper sequence for building assemblies, boms etc

I have looked at numerous suiteanswers and cannot find the proper way to set up Assemblies/BOMs.

We have the inventory items all ready but when trying to create a BOM it sends me to assemblies, when working with assemblies it sends me back to BOMs. No where am I able to enter the assembly items to make my final goods sellable item.

Can someone provide a sequence of event to get these entered?
