Supply Required by Date

How is the Supply Required by Date populated within a Sales order? I had assumed it would be by the Ship Date, however i just batch imported a few hundred orders only to realize that it allocated all my inventory out (creating a nightmare) based on the Supply Required by Date which appears to be set to the actual SO date and not the Ship Date?

Is there a way to process all the SO's to have the supply required by date set equal to the ship date of the SOs? Or am i misunderstanding Supply Required by Date?
