External ID's

I thought I asked this question before, but I cannot find it.

Does anyone know if it is possible to import (or mass update) external ID's? I have lots of items that get edited many many times as well as many many customers and it would be great if I could use an external ID since sometimes I have an external ID in my csv file and have to download the items and attach their internal ID's.
