how to stop auto-generated document number going too long?

We use Auto-generated number as reference number in Vendor Return Authorization. When a long number is used by accident, the next document number will be the next available number after the long number.

Now the document number is crazy long. It's not possible to update all of them to smaller number. Even after reset the number, it will go crazy again soon. Can you please advise how to stop auto-generated document number going too long?
