How to add the Internal ID to the Item Part Number using Workflow upon Item creation?

Hello,

I'd like to include the internal ID in an Item Number/Name, but this doesn't seem to populate until after the record has been created.

I have created a workflow that includes the internal ID, and have set it to execute 'after submit' but the record will not save unless there is a value in the item number (which is what I am trying to populate with the internal ID.)

Is what I am trying to do even possible? If so, how?
