Why cant I add custom field on the Report?

Hello,

I am customizing a report that is viewing Sales by Item but I also want to add in some customer data - specifically a custom field we created that is under Customer/Project - Category. This field is not listed in the field list under Add Fields. Is there a way to pull that specific field in?
