Unable to add unit type to an inventory item

Hi we have an inventory item where the primary units type field, primary stock unit, primary purchase unit and primary sale unit were left blank. This inventory item (a component for an assembly) has quite a few work orders/assembly built transactions(over 800). We would like to add to the above fields eg primary unit type field as length and other fields as centimetres. However, we are getting the error message below when we try to update these fields. how can we resolve this issue?
