Workflow Process within 2 Modules

Is it possible to use the workflow feature to update a field in 2 modules? For example, if you have a field in a SO record and you want it to update a field that is on the customer record that is connected to the SO, how would you create the workflow?

ex: When a checkbox is checked on the SO, update the customer field to checked. I'm struggling to understand how to update the customer checkbox through workflow.
