Item Matrix prevent child items custom field being overwritten

Hi,

We have several item matrix's that have a custom field on.

The child items may have a different values for this field. The problem is if we do and update on the matrix item this field is overwrote in the child items. Is it possible to prevent this field being update on the child items where we perform a matrix update. Failing that is is possible to use a script to update the child items with the previous custom field value automatically
