Storing the value of workflow state field

I have a workflow state field that captures the field value of the expected ship date before it is edited
The field is named 'Old Shipping Date':
This workflow field should then be used to populate a transaction line custom field called 'original expected ship date'
the intention is to capture changes in the expected shipping date so that this can trigger an email to the customer.
My workflow is set up to:
- capture the expected shipping date (native field) on a before record load trigger and store the value in the 'old shipping date' field (workflow state field)
