Ignore spaces/hyphens in product names for search

For searching on the website, is there anyway that you can specify that the search algorithm ignores spaces and hyphens?

For example, the item named "xy500" should return for all of the follolwing searches:

"xy500"
"xy 500"
"xy-500"


I know you can use keywords, but was wondering whether there was any other global setting that I was unaware of.
