What script type to use for approval look ups?

Hi There


I have a custom record with approvers and their approval limits and department delegations

I am trying to source this on a vendor bill record. Once the user changes the department value, it should trigger a search for the custom record where the department is the new value. The approver returned should have approval delegation for the dollar value of the vendor bill

What script type should I be using for this? (e..g. client script, user event, suitelet,etc)?

Also, what entry point?
