Project Task Start/End Date fields

When a task has a fixed start date, i use that field as well as the end date field. Are these fields informational only? or maybe we dont have the right subscription? My scenario - i have tasks for each month and i have their start and end dates filled in. I would like the task to open on the start date and close on the end date. Is this possible?
