Why is the value in Quote field is not carrying over to Sales Order for the same field?

We have a Quote field that is calculating margin and is populated with a value on the quote record. I added this same field to the Sales Order so I we can see the quote margin on the Sales Order record, but the field value did not carry over. Can someone explain this?
