Why is a transaction with a Posting Period date mismatch not showing in the report?

We have transactions that we've recorded this month, but need them to be posted in the prior month (December 2023). We have the date as 1/24/2024 and the posting period as Dec 2023. However, when we view the transactions for 2023, we do not see the 1/24 transaction showing. Could you explain why this wouldn't show if we are using Dec as the posting period?
