Sales Order needs to be invoiced in multiple terms

If a Sales Order needs to be invoiced in multiple terms, is it required to have a line on the SO per invoice, or can this be done via the Quantity field in the SO? By pushing the “next bill” button, the next bill should be generated based on the predefined information. So how does the button ‘Next Bill’ calculate the next bill; based on what criteria?
