Create a custom field on a custom form that calculates the difference between two date/time fields

Created two (2) Date/Time custom fields called Time In and Time out on a custom record.

These fields are successfully being used to enter time in and time out in the field.

I was able to successfully add the difference between these two fields to a Saved Search using a formula:

I have been asked to create a custom field and add to the custom form using a similar formula, however I have been unsuccessful in creating the formula in the custom field to calculate the difference between the two fields. I have tried multiple combinations of To_Num/Round/Date/Time type/Integer Type/ etc. to no avail.
