Custom field Change

I am wanting to change a custom field from "email" to "Free Form Text". When I go to do this, I get this warning. Is this something I need to worry about?

If you change the type of this custom field, you will lose data when the custom field is updated by its associated bundle or SDF project. To proceed with changing the field type, click OK.
