What is best practice when inactivating Items in Grid Order templates

My client is receiving the following error when trying to delete a child Matrix item that is also present in a grid order template:

Unable to inactivate item because it is used in a grid template

SA91834 states that inactivation is not possible in this scenario and it is not possible to edit the Grid Order Template.

What is the best practice when Matrix Items are at end of life??
