Custom segment

Hi,
When I fill out the custom segment header field and leave it blank on the transaction line, the value from the header is not automatically copied to the custom segment line field saving the transaction. Unlike native segments, which are automatically copied from a header to a line.Can anyone tell me why this happens or if there is something I need to do in order to get the custom segment to behave like a native segment?
