Issue with a sub list saved search on transactions

How can we create a sub list saved search on a Vendor Bill record that list all related transactions? I can create a SS and apply it to a Sale Order and assign that SO a number in a custbody ID field and all transactions originating from the SO carry that custom body field ID.
A sub list saved Search on the Sales Order works as expected but if I apply it to a Vendor Bill (with the same ID no data is returned, unless I turn off the custBody ID field filter, then all data is returned and it is of no use.
