Workflow on item

I have tried to create a pop up on any inventory item where the purchase has not been updated in over 6 months when entered on a sales order. I have created the search that it should use but it does not work.

I then thought to try adding a check box on the item record itself to trigger it. That did no work either. How can I make this happen?
