How to merge a lead as a contact into a company? The merge of the entity '2430 Scrap' was blocked...

Hi all~

On my commerce website when a new customer signs up they are created as a Lead in the backend. However, some of these signups may be part of larger Customers and we will want to merge them into that Customer record as a contact. Does anyone know the correct process for this?

Currently, I am trying to merge the lead into the customer which doesn't work, so I also try to take the lead and convert it into a prospect and then attempt to merge the prospect into the customer as a contact. During either merge I get the error -
