How do I deal with column breaks on fields that aren't both in Edit and View mode?

On my form, it makes sense to have the fields in a particular order. However, 1 of those fields, the Ship to Select field doesn't appear in both View and Edit mode. This means, if I have a column break on this field, when in View mode the form completely ignores it and the column break, putting all of my fields into 1 big column.

Is there a workaround for this? Or do I have to suck it up and put some other field in before it so that the column breaks are always rendered correctly?
