Prevent automatic transaction numbering change

Does anyone know of a way to prevent NetSuite from picking up and running with an accidental change to document number?

For example, we might start with O104 with the automatic numbering system, but when someone accidentally enters O1055555555555 NetSuite will abandon its settings and make the next order O1005555555556.

Is there any known way to prevent this beyond disallowing users from entering an order reference themselves?
