Update custom country field with REST

We're trying to update a custom field with the list/record Country via REST. When Using id=US, we're getting this error: Error while accessing a resource. You have entered an Invalid Field Value US for the following field: custbody_tfw_jl_country.

We are using the syntax:

"custbody_tfw_jl_country": {  "id": "US"},

What should we be using instead?
