New non-inventory item for Purchase - external ID needed?

When creating a new non-inventory item for purchase, you identify the expense account it is tied to. That expense account has an external ID associated with it. Do I need to do a .csv import to assign an external ID to the item for data integration to other systems even though the expense account tied to it already has one?
