Proforma Invoices from Sales Order

I want to create a pro-forma invoice template that can be generated from a sales order. My understanding is that this is not a native function.

The solution would be to create a custom Advanced PDF Template and create a workflow to add button to the sales order.

Is this correct and has anyone done this successfully? Can you provide details.
