Can I Hide a Field using User Event Scripts?

I found this topic here:

NSC | How to Hide a Field Using User Event Scripts — NetSuite Community

But it doesn't answer the question.

I think I can do this on a Client Script using
field.isDisplay = false

or a Suitelet using
field.updateDisplayType

But can't get either of these to work on my UE, am I doing it wrong?
