Financial statement roll-up/group by custom segment

Hi, my company is interested in adding custom segment (Account Category) with the purpose of rolling up into them on financial statements like Balance Sheet & Income statement. When editing the financial layout on the report the custom segment is not available for selection (only the native financial dimensions: sub, location, etc). Based on SuiteAnswer ID 43584 this is not possible. Has someone else dealt with this to confirm if it's doable just by customizing the reports? Or through some other means, I am open to suggestions. Thanks.
