Add custom transaction field to Transaction Form PDF Layout Template (basic)

Question

Hi I'm trying to add a custom transaction field on a Purchase Order to the Item Label Transaction PDF Layout Template (basic not advanced PDF/HTML template) in Netsuite. I've tried following 'Suiteanswer 37592 - Add Transaction Date of Item Receipt' as a guide but it doesn't work. When I render the Item Labels nothing appears. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

For the basic Item Label Transaction PDF Layout, the field has to be available from the transaction context that the label is rendering from.

In the SuiteAnswer example, the field being printed is a custom transaction body field stored on the Purchase Order, and the PDF layout references it like:

{transaction.custbodyxx}

A few things to check:

* Make sure your custom field is a Transaction Body Field, not a line field.
* Make sure Store Value is checked. If it is not stored, the basic PDF layout may not have a value to print.
* Make sure the field applies to the correct transaction type. For a PO-based label, it should apply to Purchase.
* Confirm the field actually has a value on the Purchase Order before printing the label.
* In the layout, use the exact field ID, for example:

{transaction.custbody_your_field_id}

If nothing appears, the most common reason is that the custom field is either not stored, not applied to the PO, or the value exists on a different transaction, such as the Item Receipt instead of the Purchase Order.

Also, if you are trying to print a custom field from the Item Receipt while the label is sourcing from the Purchase Order, it will not pull automatically. You would need to copy that value onto the PO field first, usually with a script or workflow.

For your follow-up, Item Labels are generally tied to the transaction context NetSuite uses when printing them. If the label is being printed from the Purchase Order flow, the available fields are usually from the PO context, which is why {transaction.custbody...} works only when that value exists on the PO.

I do not believe there is a standard setting to simply switch the basic Item Label PDF Layout from being PO-based to Item Receipt-based.

The usual workaround is to copy the Item Receipt value you need onto the Purchase Order or another field that the label layout can access, then reference that field on the label. This can be done manually, by workflow, or by script depending on the use case.

So in short:

Item Label source context → controlled by NetSuite

Direct Item Receipt-based label using basic layout → likely not supported

Workaround → store/copy the needed Item Receipt values to a field available to the label template
