Essbase vs OAC

Content

Hi All,

A traditional EPM user looking to move to the cloud and I want to clear myself of some confusion on what OAC is and what role essbase plays in it. Can someone please clarify if Essbase is the backend engine for OAC or if it is just a product within the OAC Suite? I have tried to read Oracle's documentation on the topic and it isn't clear if they use essbase as the backend or if it is just a product in the OAC Suite.

Thanks,

Ted.

There are 2 OAC flavors.  The main OAC uses a version of the Oracle BIEE server as its backend engine.  This allows one to define a repository that pulls data from multiple data sources.  If a data source in turn has analytical capabilities, the BI server might push some of the analysis to the data source.  One of the possible data sources for OAC is Essbase.  Another flavor is Oracle Analytics Cloud – Essbase which uses Essbase directly as the analytical engine with Smart View as the graphical front end.

Actually, there is only 1 flavor or OAC nowadays which is the first one described by Richard.

Essbase is no longer part of the OAC label but has become an independant product again. It is available on-prem or in the cloud through the Oracle Cloud Marketplace (OCI Marketplace). If you are looking for documentation on Oracle Essbase, you need to search under the database section of products: https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/other-databases/essbase/index.html
