Password Protected Excel file for BI Publisher Scheduled Reports

Our idea is to create a password protection functionality for Excel outputs (can be applied to any other type of output) where the user can define the password at run time. It might be added in Schedule Job Report screen as a required field where the user must set up a password for that schedule output. The same analogy can be applied for OTBI Agents.

 

Use Case and Business Need

We see a big Data Protection/GDPR risk with BI Publisher Schedule Job Report functionality. Currently, we have the option to add a password for the report output but only at Report level (Report properties), which means, a single password would have to be released to all users of that particular report and so forth for all reports. It is not feasible for our businesses whatsoever.

Risk: Users can schedule jobs to send Excel reports via email with no password protection. HR is a data sensitive area and with new GDPR rules in place, we need to mitigate the smallest risks.

The benefit is that our reports would be in compliance with Data Protection regulations.

Because of this lack of security we are locking down some functionalities of our OBIEE, such as: OTBI Agent creation and BI Publisher Report Job scheduling.
