Description

The Issue

Where there is a BI Publisher report created with multiple output templates and the user/customer requires to schedule/submit the report to output all the different outputs.  This may be required to capture data in different forms for analysis or in more cases integration extracts.

Before the user/customer submits the report/extract they can select the "Output Name" to uniquely identify the each output related to the template used.  However when the user/customer tries to save the file the downloaded name reverts back to the BI Publisher xdo name.

The Idea!

The user/customer should be able to download the output, from the scheduled BIP report, with the name they have applied to it on submission and NOT default to the report .xdo name.

Background

Note that the issue has been outlined in MyOracleSupport SRs:

  • Original SR: 3-20452414251 – date raised 02/07/2019
  • Current SR: 3-20716649171 – date raised 08/08/2019

It was advised by Oracle Developers that this was a gap in the process and that I should raise a enhancement request for this.

Use Case and Business Need

Scenario:

  1. Where there is a BI Publisher report created with multiple output templates
  2. Each template extracting different elements, in different formats, of the data retrieved from a single data model
  3. User/customer requires all outputs generated to reflect the name denoted to each output prior to final submission.

Use Case:

Supplier/Customer integration extract - for example a Payroll vendor may require extracts from Oracle to process there customers payroll.  The Payroll vendor may require the data separated differently to how Oracle stores it, in order for it to process it. Hence there would be multiple templates per single BI Publisher report/extract (i.e. data model).  The user/customer would require it to output all variant templates in a single submission.  Oracle does allow this and also enables the user/customer to give unique names to each output related to the template chosen.  It would then be expected that when the user/customer downloads the successful output, it would inherit the name given prior to submission.  This provides a logic integrity and enables a audit the life cycle of the file; both factors being imperative for all customers.

However on downloading the output files it currently defaults to the name of the BIP name, negating any purpose for the user/customer having the ability to name the output files prior to submission.

More details

Currently, we have configured the BIP report to be run as a ESS Job, however this presents the same issue as outlined above.  Hence it would be beneficial that the process should be enhanced for both operations.

At CPS we are using BIP extracts to interface to an external payroll vendor.  The payroll vendor has different naming standards for each of the extracts.  Hence currently this is causing an issue as users, compiling the extracts, are expected to manually rename file names to reflect naming standards required for the payroll vendor every time it is run.  This is a regular activity and this enhancement would provide greater integrity.
