Greetings,

I am completely new to OBIEE.

I want to learn OBIEE.

Went to this tutorial: Creating a Repository Using the Oracle BI Administration Tool (12.2.1.0.0)

It says that I have to have OBIEE 12c Installed.

So, I went to the OBIEE download page: Oracle Business Intelligence 12c (12.2.1.0.0) Downloads

It looks like for me to install OBIEE, I have to

(1.) First install JDK8. Then

(2.) Web Logic Server, then only install

(3.) OBIEE 12c

This looks like a very complex process. The files are also about 6GB in size.

Is this the method to install OBIEE??

What about the database.  Don't we have to install a 12c EE DB first?

What about the Oracle Business Intelligence Developer Client Tool (12.2.1.0.0) in the download page?? Do we have to install that as well?

Is there an easier way to do this? i.e. Learn OBIEE without installing all of these? Is there a some sort of Oracle "virtual machine" where

all of these are installed, and all we have to do is install that in our PC?

I got down this book as a guide to learn OBIEE:  https://www.amazon.com/Implement-Oracle-Business-Intelligence-1/dp/1475122012

But this book is one published in 2012 for OBIEE 11g.  Will going through this help me in learning 12c??  Are the concepts still the same between 11g and 12c OBIEE?

I am also aiming for a certification in OBIEE. The problem is that there is no certification for OBIEE 12c.  It is available for only 11g, this one: Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite 11g Certified Implementation Specialist

Which OBIEE version should I be learning, 11g or 12c??

What is the best way to get started?

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Try using the sampleapp, this is a virtual machine with everything set up. All you need to do is to download and a bit of configuration and you're up and running.

Alternatively, you could log on to https://slc02oks.oracle.com:7780/analytics

  • Interesting that you didn't mention the official documentation ...

It's actually the place where to look for details on how to install etc.

As you are really new to all this I would suggest to get a training, that's the easiest way to start ...

If you really want a book the official Developer Guide is maybe better (https://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Business-Intelligence-Developers-Guide/dp/0071798749/ref=la_B00B8YEQMU_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8… ).

It's for 11g, nothing similar has been release for 12c now (and not sure if somebody will write it).

The architecture of the tool changed between 11g and 12c, but the RPD, how it works, how you use it and the front end still do the same things globally.

Which version? Up to you to know ... Most of the prod environment are still on 11g, 12c is really new (released less than 1 year ago), just got a first main update to 12.2.1.1.0 end of June.

But again: a training is generally the best ...

Unfortunately there are no training programs where I live.
