Contextual Insights - Needs Provision to 'Change Selection' when 'No insights are found'

Scenario:

  • One and only one contextual insight generated from a datapoint, which was given a 'thumbs-down'.
  • This led to the below error citing 'No insights were found.' And prompted to 'Try changing selection to discover insights'.

  • Only selection of a different category of data points is generating new insights - 'not a different data point within the same category'.

Is this an expected behaviour? If not, need a clearer provision to change the selection of data points to discover new insights.

  • Hi @Ambili thanks,

    Contextual Insights (CI) compares your selection with the rest of the data in the chart and runs an algorithm to identify dimensional breakdowns where respective distributions significantly differ. One possibility is that the number of records in your selection be too small to statistically identify differences. Can you confirm the selection is still high enough ? Another possibility is that you have too few columns in 'Related Columns' grammar edge. Could any of these be the case here ?

    let us know. Thanks

    @Lalitha Venkataraman-Oracle FYI.

    Hi @Philippe Lions-Oracle ,

    Thank you for responding with detailed clarification to my query.

    More details about my scenario is explained below.

    Snapshot of the visualisation I was working on:

    The below screenshot shows the datapoint on which Contextual Insight analysis was applied.

    I have added 4 related columns for this visualisation as shown below:

    This is a dataset with only 145 records and as your rightly pointed out, the possibility of the number of records in my selection be too small to statistically identify differences could very much be the case.

  • Hi @Ambili

    Thanks for using the feature :)

    In your example, your source viz(one on which CI is invoked) already has transportation_type and age as part of it's context. Adding them to related columns is futile as the algorithm will ignore it (reason- your source viz is already showing you the distribution by these attributes. No point in CI showing you this distribution again).

    So in this case, CI has only Scholarship as a candidate column and it shows an insight using this attribute. If you have more attributes in your dataset, you can add them to related columns and you should see more insights in the CI panel. Hope this helps

    Thank you @Lalitha Venkataraman-Oracle , for guiding me further. When I add more attributes under 'Related Columns', it is definitely generating more insights in the CI panel.

    To get to my test scenario, I went ahead and gave thumbs down to all the additional insights generated. At that point, what I observe is:

    1. Once we hit the below error notification, even if we do a 'data refresh' or 'page refresh' - the same datapoint will not show the CI insights originally generated again. image.png

    2. CI works perfectly from other datapoints, after the above scenario is reached.

    Question / Idea:

    Suppose the user is giving Thumbs Down to each CI insight, to verify what new insight could further be generated and eventually hits the 'No insights were found' notification. At this point, if they want to again verify the initial insights, how can they see it?

    Even when we load the workbook afresh, the same datapoint is repeating the 'No insights..' notification when CI is reinitiated.

    If not already present, a workaround for this scenario, would make the CI feature more refined.
