Hi,

When configuring OBIEE 12c, there are 3 components checked by default.  I'm not familiar with Essbase.  Does anyone know if a separate license is required to use Essbase?  How do you use it?  I don't see any links in Analytics page.

If you won't be using EssBase, then unchecked the options and continue with your installation. See here for more details: http://www.redstk.com/installing-obiee-12c-part-4-configuring-starting-obiee/

  • First a note based on previous answer: keep in mind that if you uncheck it and don't install it you will not be able to install it afterward without doing a full OBIEE install again.

On the other hand if you install it you can disable it afterward ...

In 11g the embedded Essbase required the Foundation Suite license. It's not a standalone or EPM Essbase, it's a different one so you can't license it standalone.

How to you use it? It's there mainly for the Essbase Acceleration Wizard first, have a look at this: OBIEE12c and Embedded Essbase 12c - An Initial Look at Query Accelera…  In few words it's a easy way to create cubes for aggregates to make your analysis faster.

You can also use it for other needs (the license is a bit unclear on that side in my mind), but there isn't any Essbase Admin Console delivered with 12c. Have a look at this for options on how to create your own cubes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XOIgeLJLV4

Finally you aren't going to see any link to it as Essbase is a datasource, not a front end tool. So you can use it in your RPD or in Publisher as a source for reports.

    Hi Gianni,

You mentioned it can be disabled after install.  Where should I go to disable it?

  • Check in MOS, there is a document about that. There is one for OBIEE 11g and didn't checked lately if they wrote one for 12c as well. If they didn't and you don't want the 11g and "adapt" the solution for 12c you can ask Oracle to give you the steps for 12c and they will write one for 12c I would say.

The simple way is to disable the component and so it doesn't start anymore, it's there but not running, so not using CPU, RAM and impossible to use it.

In the end I would say it's not bad to install it, even if you don't use it now and are going to use only the Essbase Acceleration Wizard.
