Add 'Promote to Semantic Model' in DV - publish any DV dataset as a governed subject area
Problem
When a business analyst builds a dataset in DV - joins, filters, calculated measures that work is permanently trapped in DV. There is no path to push it into the Semantic Layer. BI developers must manually rebuild every join, formula, and column mapping from scratch in the Semantic Modeler. This costs 2–5 developer days per dataset, introduces errors, and causes the two models to drift. Self-service analytics never graduates into governed enterprise data.
Proposed solution
Add a "Promote to Semantic Model" button in the DV dataset editor:
- Analyst selects columns, joins, and measures to promote and picks a target subject area folder
- BI developer gets a review queue with all mappings and formulas pre-populated - approves, edits, or rejects individual items
- Approved fields go live in the subject area, available to all DV workbooks, Answers, and reports
- Optional sync keeps the source DV workbook aligned with the semantic layer going forward
Why it matters
Governance stays fully intact - nothing lands without BI dev sign-off. This simply replaces the rebuild with a review. Power BI and Tableau have already closed this gap. Oracle has the architecture to do it better with a proper governed approval workflow. This closes the self-service → governed analytics loop.
