Hi all,

Has anyone installed this version yet? Initial thoughts?

We have just installed 4 new 12.3 servers (pre prod only at this stage) and the boss is already talking about moving onto .4 before we live because the integration between DV and OBIEE has been fixed (apparently).

Obvoiusly I have concerns rolling out a version of OBIEE into production a month after the version release so interested to hear the thoughts of others.

Cheers,
Adam

For a list of the new features look here - OBIEE in IL: obiee 12.2.1.4.0 is available

Only new OBIEE on premise feature is Theme Management which has been in OAC for some time and as you mentioned, OBIEE and DV integration has been tightened in this release. It’s always a risk with new software but 12.2.1.4 will contain a lot of bug fixes but it could potentially introduce a few itself!

  • My opinion is that it isn't supposed to be a big risk, mainly because the OBIEE core didn't really change (theme management? Yeah ... useless when you know how to properly customize OBIEE). So on that side little or no extra issue than .3 is expected.

For the DV side ... it's newer, and as they had it for a while in OAC already I'm optimistic in thinking it will be working fine.

PS: apparently this morning I'm really positive thinking, Oracle often managed to get me back to a more objective thinking in the past

So just on the theme management.
We have extended the alta theme and use a deployment to house our own styling.
Will this be impacted or have we done it the right way?

I'm glad this version is focussed on bug fix rather than introducing more features. DV integration is important to us so i'm leaning towards upgrading before we go live.

    Appreciate both of your feedback.

Gianni, I hope you don't mind but I will give Joel correct answer purely for the fact he was first in and because you have enough points already

  • I didn't try deploying my own style in the "old" way, but I would be surprised if it doesn't work anymore.

The new theme management store a weird thing in the catalog with isn't really a custom style as it doesn't have CSS files but an XML with some properties inside.

It looks more like a simple way for those who want to change the logo and title in the header but keep not understand the official documented way of doing it (and so they replace out of the box files randomly).

All good for the points, he was first (and right)

guys, is this the old method of customisation?

    https://www.rittmanmead.com/blog/2010/12/oracle-bi-ee-11g-styles-skins-custom-xml-messages/

If so, what is the new way?

EDIT: I expect this will be Gianni's response (haha) which means we currently use the old method. Is it critical that we move to use the new way or can we get by for now?

EDIT the 2nd: I should continued to read. We utilise a 2 node cluster so it makes sense to keep our customisations in a shared folder (ie network share) which means what we have done is correct?

Just completed upgrade to 12.2.1.4.0. We have "Manage Themes" option in Administration screen in OBIEE 12.2.1.4.0..

  • I changed my mind few times about the "best" way to do the customization. Both ways are documented and supported by Oracle, that's the good news.

The EAR lost all the interest except if in a cluster, but if you have a shared folder mounted on all the nodes it's easier and better to go for the shared folder, mainly because of the benefits of being able to deploy new things "live" etc.

    Thanks Gianni.

@Ebin Cherian, the options there seem fairly bland. Certainly not missing anything having already customised that's for sure.

Do we have any document with bug fixes in latest version. Please share.

    Thanks,

    Ravi.
