Changing the Master Server in an OBIEE 12c Cluster

We've got a 5 cluster setup where normally server 1 acts as the master for RPD deployments etc (as seen via the admin tool and Manage Cluster). Now, server 1 needs to be taken offline for a few days to we'd like to switch the Master server to be server 2 - however I don't seem to be able to find a way to do this in 12c - was easy enough via config files in 11g but that option no longer exists in 12c as far as I can see. Has anybody succeeded in making this change?

Why do you need to make server 2 the master?

Does server 1 have the admin server installed on it?

The oracle documentation makes the assumptions that you cannot delete the master which then suggests that you can't change it either.

We're running in an HA environment (using Oracle's recommended method) so can start the Admin Server on any of the servers in the cluster via a share. As server 1 is unavailable we're running the AS on server 2 but it still thinks that server 1 is the master - even though it's offline.

Is the main issue that you can't deploy to RPD?
Have you tried doing your changes offline?

Oracle documentation states:

"The Administration Tool uses the same Oracle BI ODBC DSN that Presentation Services uses. It is directed to the Master BI Server by the Cluster Controller. If the Master BI Server is unavailable, the Administration Tool cannot perform RPD file writes."

Yes, the only issue is that we cannot do an RPD deployment (either offline or online) due to the master server being offline.

Was easy to define the master server in 11g but seems to be no obvious way within 12c.

We are using a shared directory for cache, RPD and catalog (as per standard cluster setup)

I think you may be right about not being able to do it in 12c.
In the 11g documentation it states:

If the Master BI Server is permanently unavailable, you must appoint one of the other servers as the new master:Scale in the Master BI Server using the Scalability tab of the Capacity Management page in Fusion Middleware Control.Restart the Oracle BI EE system components.The system assigns a new Master BI Server.

Removing Existing Computers

Remove a failed or redundant computer from a BI Cluster.AssumptionsNo binaries, configuration or state is deleted from the removed computer.Cluster Controller, Scheduler and BI Server mastership is unchanged.You cannot remove the master computer.

I think it's best if you raise an SR.

That's unfortunately the conclusion I've come to also. Have raised and SR but received no real answer either way so that's why I came here :-)

Sorry I couldn't be of any help.
I currently have 6 active SR's. One of them has been open for 22 days and they've just told me I have an SSL issue even though my OP was "I have an SSL issue".

That's very much my experience with SRs ... getting the right person early on helps a lot, otherwise it's a VERY slow and frustrating process ..... we have some that have been open for over a year at Sev 1!
