You're not specifying which exact version you are talking about, but the concept of changing such things is basically explained in MOS Doc ID 2029384.1 and similar documents. Haven't changed that exact setting yet but it's all configurable. Just make sure you back up everything before putting your fingers in there. You may mess up your environment...
Just use the 'line break' functionality to make new lines and hence a vertical presentation if it is reasonably small and you only want a single column.
