I want to apologize in advance if this is a bit of a naive question.

We unfortunately dont have a dedicated administrator on my team for OBIEE. Our OBIEE was installed by a contractor, and he is now gone - Now my manager would like to upgrade OBIEE to the latest version and I was asked to look into it.

Currently we have OBIEE 12.2.1.2 installed on a Unix box, and I was looking at doing an in place upgrade as I am assuming this may be the easier route.

I was reading the documentation provided here: https://docs.oracle.com/middleware/bi12214/lcm/OBIUP/GUID-93B3A0DC-7546-4ABB-946E-593B3AAE444D.htm#OBIUP-GUID-93B3A0DC-7…

And I have been trying to read as many items as I can but wanted to confirm a few things

-Are there any patches or anything I need to install before starting the actual OBIEE install?

I know I need to install these items: Oracle Fusion Middleware Infrastructure (fmw_12.2.1.3.0_infrastructure_generic.jar) and Oracle Business Intelligence (UNIX: fmw_12.2.1.4.0_bi_platform_linux64.bin) - But i had read on a blog that I may need to install some patches before I start these items?

-When I am doing an in place upgrade, it mentions to install OBIEE into a new Oracle home. For all the reports/RPD and other items I am assuming these are all in the domain folder - Which if I understand correctly when I run the re-configuration wizard and go through the steps then it will all point to the new Oracle home afterwards.

So for example, we currently have two folders

-/<dir>/Oracle_home_12212

-/<dir>/Oracle_Domain_home

After I run through the guide, would I then end up with 3 folders finally?

-/<dir>/Oracle_home_12212

-/<dir>/Oracle_home_12214

-/<dir>/Oracle_Domain_home

If this is the case, then is it safe for me to remove the old oracle home once everything has been validated?

I guess I am generally trying to ask if anyone else experienced any issues while doing a similar upgrade to 12.2.1.4. I am also trying to get an idea of what the end state would look like so I have an idea what to expect at a high level.

My manager would really like to have the expertise in house in being able to upgrade our OBIEE instance moving forward vs having to call a consultant in each time to upgrade. So I am some what starting from the bottom here and any insight would be much appreciated

After installing OBIEE 12.2.1.4 you might need to apply critical patches. Check the Oracle support and apply the most recent and recommended cumulative Critical Patch Update (CPU) patch.

For the on-premises 12.2.1.4 release the patch is 28500593. Is it your on premise or cloud?

Yes after upgrade you will have -/<dir>/Oracle_home_12214 and it depends on how you originally installed the OBIEE version.

/Oracle_Domain_home will have the updated bi domain folder and you should not remove this folder.
