We are doing POC on OAS and looking for help on configuring ActAs feature in OAS>

Is that option available? if yes, how to do that. Some oracle documents says its deprecated and few documents give steps but those options are not available.

Any help on this is appreciated.

  • The doc is very explicit:

And right above the meaning of "deprecated":

Deprecated features won't be enhanced in the future but are supported for the full life of the Oracle Analytics Server 5.5.x release. Where indicated, a deprecated feature might be desupported in a future, major release.

Did you contact support to know how to enable it?

Thank you Gianni, You are absolutely right and we did see that document as well.

This particular document made us to confuse a bit. It has option to connect to Oracle Fusion applications and how is it different to regular OAS, to make sure I asked the question so experts like you will help us more.

    Thank you again.

  • The integration with Fusion apps or EBS etc. is a special case.

"Act As" is basically like it was in OBIEE 12.2.1.4 if I don't remember wrong, but you need to enable it first as it's disabled. There is a MOS document about it.

And "Act As" really just works fine in OAS 5.5, the question is more for the future: what will come when this goes away? Because deprecated features are meant to be replaced by something else (based on what Oracle said when many complained they deprecated "Act As").

True Thing, even its the case with 11g. We have to do setup for ActAs.

If this is gone in future, there is no point relying on this feature. This feature is very helpful to developers and it really makes one of many strong points for OBI distinct to other growing reporting tools like Tableau and Power BI.

Very sad that Oracle is deprecating it with no replacement :(

  • That's why Oracle explicitly wrote in the doc the meaning of deprecated and desupported. Because the very first version of the doc just said it was deprecated without saying it was still there.

Oracle understood the "Act As" is an important feature and that many customers needed it. That's when they said that they will work on an alternative solution and remove it when an alternative will be available.

You can't expect the alternative to exist right now, or the feature would be desupported already instead of deprecated or even fully removed like OSSM.

If you have a concern by this feature being removed from the product, let Oracle know. The more report of customers needing this and this feature being a key criteria in the choice of the analytics platform, the better Oracle will be able to develop the product to preserve their customers.
