OBIEE 11.1.1.7

Hello,

I would like to create some simple reports off of an Essbase Cube with the following Dimensions

Location
Product
Time

In some reports I only want to use Location and Product dimensions. Must I also include some reference to Time? I am not understanding how to define Non Member or Member in OBIEE.

Thanks In Advance

I'm not getting your requirement here. Have you worked with either Essbase or Oracle BI before?

  • Hi,

It can depend on your cube ....

Sometime you must add at least a filter for the dim your aren't using just because the cube has no data at the gen1 of that dimension. Sometime you just choose what you need and it's enough, no need of any reference to other dims.

But it's all about how your cube looks like ...

    Thanks Gianni,

Is there a specific feature that you can enable with the cube so you don't need to references dims that are not used.

    Cheers

That's why I asked whether you have experience with Essbase or OBI - what you're asking has the following response: "Yes that feature is called proper cube construction!"

  • Well, it's not really a feature, it's called design ...

Design and build your cube correctly and it's fine.

If on the other side you have no or little idea of what Essbase is and how it works ... no other option than learn ...

    PS: Christian was quicker...

Lol. Thanks Christian. This is my first rodeo with Essbase as a source so I guess I'll have to learn it on the fly.

    Cheers

  • If Essbase for you is just the source and you aren't in charge of building the cube then you have no real option ...

Try a report and if you have no data start adding filters on dimensions not in the criteria tab, the maximum you can do is ask to the owner of the cube if they can change things (but there can be many impacts, so don't expect a yes as an answer easily ...)

Learning on the fly and facing a beast like Essbase isn't necessarily the most judicious option. Have a look here:

Cube building is like building a DWH - complex and requiring lots of design reflections before actually doing it.

Thanks for the link Christian. Luckily for me, the cubes have already been built and for now I just need to consume them in OBIEE. So far, so good.

Well in that case you're dependent on what has been done. Meaning that the cube hasn't been filled nicely in a way which permits analysis you're going to run into problems.
