Description

When on the visualize tab in OAC, there are four bars in the top right. When clicked, a drop-down menu appears with the option to "Revert to Saved". This action will undo all the changes the user made since the last save/will restore the project to how it looked when it was first opened. This action is irreversible and all changes made since the last save are lost. The idea is that there should be the ability to undo the "Revert to Saved" action in case the user were to change their mind and decide they wanted to keep their changes. This would be particularly helpful if the user has made many changes since the last save because then a substantial amount of work would be lost.

Use Case and Business Need

Reverting all the way back to the last save is a major action. All work done since the last save is lost. The user would have to spend ample time re-doing all their work which is not very efficient. Also, a user may not remember what the project looked like since the last save and click the "Revert to Saved" button expecting a different version of the project to appear resulting in the user regretting this action. This idea would rid the users of the frustrating and time-intensive task of re-doing all their work.

  • This behaves very much like the revert to save option from many many common programs in the market place ( photo editing, Word processing, Spreadsheets ).  The reason it is hidden behind a menu option unlike the 'undo/redo' action is precisely because it is destructive and not undoable ( like open/save ) .

We do have an undo action / redo action , I'm curious  why the undo / redo action is sufficient for your use case ?  How can we improve the undo / redo to accomodate your scenario ?

If many changes have been made and you want to revert back to the last save in a non-destructive way, you would have to click the undo button many times and then click redo many times to get back to the version you had before you had hit undo which is inefficient and potentially time-consuming when hours of edits and changes have been made. I would say that the undo / redo can be improved by allowing users to view a list of changes they have made and then enabling them to restore to any previous version but then also be able to undo this action.

  • so some sort of 'undo/redo' history list widget might work for you...

    Thanks

    Yes, thank you!

  • Please feel free to submit an idea for an undo/redo list (similar to Office). As it related to undo for Revert to Saved, this operation reloads the project and behaving correctly based on common standards. It is in a sense a reset operation back to square one.
