Open source the code of Oracle BI Baseline Validation Tool

Description

Oracle BI Baseline Validation Tool has been first released as a way to help adopting OBIEE 12c. It later was used to also help moving to cloud, proving that the tool was working in the same way and the same data was returned.

Now BVT is a dead product: not compatible anymore with last versions of OAC or OAS because of changes in the security model. It's still possible to achieve similar results as what BVT does with various tools (webservice etc.), but it's always home-made solutions.

By making it open source, with a clear statement of NO SUPPORT provided, you give a chance to the community to fork the code and start maintaining it and make it evolve to support new versions/products.

Use Case and Business Need

Have a base platform for regression testing and comparison between multiple environments. Useful for CI/CD processes, migrations, upgrades.

More details

BVT doesn't work anymore with the latest versions of Oracle Analytics tools

this can be used to test reports and their respective data between environments. we can also use this to test reports post upgrades of OAC/OAS

This is a go-to tool and part of our Prod migration every week. without this we lack the confidence from moving from 12c to OAS

A must have tool for all our regression testing during development and migrations. In order for us to move to new version and apply any patches on existing OBIEE stack we need BVT results in hand to get confidence that everything is in place like before.

Not sure why Oracle decided to kill it when this tool was so making such a big impact on us and many other customers. We used it extensively during our upgrade from 11g to 12c, now when we were ready to move to OAS we have no confidence that we could do this move without BVT.

Hope Oracle will do something in order for us to get this tool back in our hands.

  • Just wanted to add an info I got via a different channel: Oracle owns a patent on BVT, and that's probably also one of the reasons of why they don't share the code publicly or anything (it would anyway be a long and complicated process AFAIK to do that at Oracle).

In this context they could maintain BVT to keep making it compatible with the newer versions of OAC and OAS.

Thanks @Gianni Ceresa for your update - you always have information from right source :-). In this case Oracle should strive to make BVT (or similar tool) available for OAC/OAS. I am just wondering, why this Idea is completely without any attention from Product Development/Mgmt since its creation (year ago). When it comes to "easy stuff" (like adding some new shiny feature to visualization), reaction is usually quite quick, but when it comes to architecture/technical/governance - simply more complex ideas, usually those stay unnoticed (or its resolution takes for ages - like for example API for DV).

Any update from Oracle Analytics product team on what options are available for regression testing. There is a tool from a company called Datagaps that supposedly can be used and claims to be used by the Oracle Analytics team. Is this correct?
