i found the below error while running configuration assistant while updating BI domain.

When attempting to run the configuration assistant after doing a software only upgrade of OBIEE 11g, with the admin server and node manager server not running, the upgrade will fail.  If you go back and restart the administration server and node manager server and restart the upgrade, the following error may occur in the configuration assistant. The configuration assistant will not run. It will get to the step where you tell it to upgrade domain and put in the administration server and weblogic account information and then hang when hitting next. A similar error to this will appear in the log file:

Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException: Invalid value specified: null

I found the same error in link :- OBIEE 11g: Configuration Assistant Fails to Run with Error: "Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException: Invalid value specified: null" (Doc ID 1664854.1)

But the solution provided is not applicable for me  as

we are not using ORACLE_WEB_TIER , so is there any alternative way to check this error?

ORACLE_WEB_TIER is just a placeholder in the document referenced. Try: /opt/fmw/middleware/instances/instance1
