Patching of Remote Data Gateway

Oracle seem to release new versions of the remote data gateway on a regular basis in the format of a zip file over 1Gb in size

Presumably the updates are a minor updates to the drivers as the software/java versions etc seem to be remaining the same

As the customer how often do we have to apply these updates ?

Is there a strict policy where you can not be more than X releases of the RDG behind ?

Why don't the OAC bundle the RDG software with the latest java cpu patch this seems lazy and requires customers to have to immediately manually apply themselves on new installs.

We are deploying a significant number of OAC environments updating the RDG software is a time consuming manual task we could do without

We also run Oracle Integration Cloud that uses java based agents to provide similar on premise connectivity

They push updates to these agents directly removing any customer requirement to manually patch - can the OAC team consider moving to this model for providing updates.

Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC) employs a model where agents receive automatic updates, reducing the administrative burden on customers. Currently, RDG updates require manual intervention. Oracle acknowledges the challenges this presents, especially for customers managing multiple OAC environments. While there is no official statement regarding a shift to an automated update model for RDG, Oracle continually evaluates customer feedback to improve product experiences.

    Recommendations:

    • Regular Updates: Regularly check for and apply RDG updates to maintain support and compatibility.
    • JDK Maintenance: Monitor Oracle's CPU advisories and update the JDK used by RDG as necessary to address security vulnerabilities.
    • Provide Feedback: Share your experiences and suggestions with Oracle Support or your Oracle account representative to advocate for features like automated updates.

Private Access Channel is now available in Oracle Analytics and is recommended by Oracle for new connections to private data sources, if you are able to use it.

The best way to provide feedback is via an Ideas Lab request (not Support or Account Rep). This way the information is public, and can be commented and upvoted by the community.

Please see the following request that is already posted

    Per the RDG download page

Data Gateway versions before Data Gateway July 2024 Update are not supported.

Steve answered the question, I will just add a comment on one point:

How about automating/scripting this kind of task? There is a large number of tools that can handle such kind of task. It's the usual "write once, execute as many times as you need". Of course it doesn't replace a solution that auto-update itself, but it would avoid manual intervention, limiting the risk of errors or mistakes because of manual work.
